New to Dance Games and Dance Pads?
Let’s go over some of the basics and help you find the right dance game and pad for your needs.

You’ll need the following 3 items:
  • A Dance Game
  • A Dance Pad
  • A Video Game Console
Dance Pads:
There are three main categories for 4 button pads:

Soft with Foam Insert

Hard Metal Arcade Style

What does this all mean?
A soft pad is for beginners who are trying out dance games for the first time, unsure of how much they’ll end up playing them.

Soft pads and Insert pads are both "soft." They're both easy to fold up and put away and you don't have to wear shoes with them.

An Insert pad is basically a deluxe version of the soft pad. Insert pads have foam inserts that when zipped up inside the pad, provide the pad more cushioning and stability.

The Igniton Dance Pad® 5.0 is RedOctane's insert pad. Unlike most insert pads, it also features raised buttons. This allows the dancer to feel out where he is on the pad and avoids him having to look down, away from the screen, while playing.

Igniton Dance Pad® 5.0 are great for players of all skill levels. If you’re a beginner, but already know you’ll be playing for months to come, the Ignition is for you. No matter how good you get, the extra cushioning and support of the Ignition Pad will make sure your skill level never outpaces the pad. Another thing to remember about the Ignition (Version 3.0) is that it works with the PC under USB, Playstation 1 and 2, and Xbox!

Metal Pads are the ultimate in replicating the arcade machine experience at home. The drawback to them is that they’re not very portable. If you’re a hardcore arcade enthusiast or someone who needs the ultimate in machine-like quality, our Afterburner™ metal pad is for you! The Afterburner™ metal pad, like the Igniton Dance Pad® 5.0, is also compatible with the PC under USB, Playstation 1 and 2, and Xbox (NOT Compatible with Xbox 360)!

In the Dance Games section, we talked a little about 4 and 5 button dance games. All RedOctane-brand pads are 4 buttons. If you’re buying a Dance Dance Revolution game, you’re covered when you buy a RedOctane Dance Pad.

Video Game Console:
The video game console is what allows you to play a specific game on your television, or in the case of a Personal Computer (PC), your monitor. You’ll need to have the right video game console to play a dance game. To find out what console a pad or game supports, look under "Platform" in our product listings, right above the product description.

Unfortunately, you cannot purchase a video game console at RedOctane, but you should be able to find one at your local electronics or video games retailer.

Right now, the Sony Playstation 2 can play more dance games than any console, so we recommend the PS2 for beginning dance game players. For those of you with next generation consoles like the Nintendo Wii, our Ignition Dance Pad 5.0 is compatible with the Wii and the GameCube.

If you like to play far away from your television or monitor, you may need an extension cable for your pad (a normal pad’s cord length is 6 to 8 feet).
